dnp Supernova Mobile 80" Screen Operating Instructions

dnp Supernova Mobile 80" ScreenCongratulations
...on the purchase of your new 80” Supernova Screen. We trust you’ll be as thrilled with this technology as we are.

Concept (so you can explain to your friends)
The Supernova Screen surface is made of a 7-layer micro-lens surface engineered to absorb light from above (or below) but reflect brightly an image projected on it.

Projector Placement
The Mobile screen is designed specifically for table mounted projectors. The table must be at the SAME HEIGHT or JUST BELOW the bottom of the image area. If the projector has to point up at the screen a lot, its light will be absorbed just like room light. Use books, a milk crate, a cart or stand to adjust so the projector is level and the image fills the screen without keystoning.

(NOTE: Some projectors have a built-in offset that will place the projector 5-degrees below the screen edge. This is within the Supernova image tolerance.  Any more than 5-degrees below screen edge will result in reduced brightness due to the surface's light absorbant qualities.  For best results use a projector with lens shift.)

(ALSO NOTE: The Supernova Screen is not suited for super-short throw projectors that sit on the floor just inches from the screen.)

Windows and Other Room Lights
The Supernova Surface absorbs light from above and below, but reflects light pointing at it. If you have uncovered windows or point-source table lamps that are at the same height as the screen, those light sources may diminish screen performance. If you think the image looks washed out, please first consider the room conditions. Ceiling lights, track lights, even spot lights are not a problem, but any bright point-source light within the 5-degree acceptance angle will lower contrast.

Projector Brightness
The Supernova Mobile Screen uses a screen material that has 20% LESS reflectivity than standard matte white. The loss in brightness is more than made up in contrast, however the higher powered a projector you use, the better your results will be. We recommend a projector with minimum 3,000 ANSI Lumens and minimum resolution of 1024x768.

Screen Care
The top layer is a durable scratch protection layer, but sharp objects or creasing can mar the surface, so use care. Dust can be cleaned with a Swiffer Duster (or similar) or vacuumed with a (very) soft brush attachment. Smudges or dirt can be cleaned with an ordinary window cleaner with ammonia. Treat the entire image area and clean with a paint pad or lint-free cloth. Apply gentle counter-pressure on the reverse side. Make sure screen is dry before retracting. The case is aluminum and can be cleaned with window cleaner. Warning! Never use detergent solutions that will leave a film or layer on the surface. Also, never rub the screen hard and persistently to remove stains, as this could cause permanent damage to the screen surface.

Accessories
Advent Media now offers a custom road case for the 80" Supernova Mobile. It's a lightweight "buckle and strap" case made of strong ABS plastic. More details can be found here.

Operational Issues
The screen is so simple to use, it’s scary:

  1. Rotate Feet
  2. Position screen (level floor or table top)
  3. Open lid
  4. Use handle to lift screen

To close it’s just as simple:

  1. Press on the handle bracket (top center of the screen) to retract it
  2. Close and latch lid
  3. Rotate feet

The biggest operator error is to forget to rotate the feet. The screen will fall right over, possibly damaging the surface. We attach a label right by the handle that says “WARNING: ROTATE FEET BEFORE OPENING LID.” We suggest you do the same.

If you are using the screen in a breezy environment, there is the possibility it might blow over. Three suggestions to prevent this:

  1. Put the screen on a table so it doesn’t have to raise the full height
  2. Place the screen against a wall where no breeze will blow behind it
  3. Place heavy books or other objects on the feet to better secure it. Always weight front and back

DO NOT MOVE THE SCREEN WHEN IT IS RAISED. It’s easy enough to lower it before moving. (You can scoot it a little for better position, but if you need to take it elsewhere, always retract before moving.)

DO NOT RAISE/LOWER SCREEN BY THE SCISSOR LIFT ARMS. Only use the top center handle.

VEHICLE TRANSPORTATION. If it’s lying by itself in an SUV or minivan, rotate at least one foot to prevent it from rolling around. (We recommend the Custom Road Case if transporting it a lot.) Also do not permit the screen to sit in a hot car or be stored in direct sunlight. Exceeding the screen’s temp range can cause the following maintenance issue:

Maintenance Issues
There’s really nothing to maintain on the screen, but we have encountered one issue: If you hear a “squealing” sound as the screen is raised or lowered, Contact Us Immediately! There is a foam pad that drags against the back of the screen surface. If the foam becomes sticky from overheating or degradation, not only does it squeal, IT CAN STOP THE ROLLER AS IT RETRACTS. If that happens the screen will flap out, get pinched in the scissor lift mechanism and become creased. We can help you apply a workaround that will prevent screen damage and subsequent trip to the factory IF the issue is caught early on. If you hear a squeal, use extreme caution when retracting the screen, and call.
