What’s a dedicated server?

A server is a computer that is the physical location for your Web site.  When a visitor types in your URL, your server delivers the pages to their browser.  Most “shared” hosting plans have up to 1,000 Web sites from as many different people on a server.  That can cause problems, so Advent Media obtained a dedicated server solely for our customers.

Maximum Power

While most “shared” hosting plans (typically $5 – $25/month) share space on a server with up to 1,000 Web sites, we are limiting our server to under 30 sites.  That means your site has more memory and processor power to work with.  And since our server is optimized for the demands of DotNetNuke, there are no strange technical hiccups if another user does something stupid on their site.

Maximum Security

To better protect your site, by default we disable FTP access, since the PainFree Website offers you the ability to upload files from within its framework.  This means one more door is closed to the hackers.  If your application requires increased security our optional Security Package can be implemented to give you a secure SSL certificate and other safeguards.

Content Management - Included

With most “shared” hosting plans, you’re pretty much on your own with your site itself, but our hosting plans offer our personal assistance if you need to create a page, add a module or do anything beyond normal content maintenance.  The amount of assistance varies with the plan chosen.

Domain Management - Included

You may not understand that your “domain” (the “somethingorother.com” name that identifies your Web site) is always managed and billed separately by other hosting companies.  You can purchase your own domain from several registrars, but you then must keep the domain registration paid up.  We can transfer your domain to our domain management system or register a new one for you, assuring automatic renewal and simplifying billing.
